About AFRISOTA

AFRISOTA is a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the dignity, cultural identity, wellness, and public voice of African immigrant youth and families. We combine community programming, storytelling, research, advocacy, and institutional education to address challenges identified by the people most affected by them.

Our Story

AFRISOTA began with a question: What happens when immigrants who are legally present in the United States still experience exclusion, cultural alienation, discrimination, and institutional harm?

Dr. John Ewu examined that question through his doctoral research, Human Rights Violations Against Legal Immigrants in Minnesota. The research documented barriers that immigrants encounter in workplaces, schools, public systems, and community life. It also affirmed the importance of culture, family, community knowledge, and personal voice in responding to those barriers.

AFRISOTA was established to turn research into community action, creating spaces where African immigrants can speak for themselves, strengthen families, preserve cultural knowledge, support young people, navigate institutions, and contribute to public decisions.

Today, AFRISOTA works with youth, parents, elders, volunteers, researchers, artists, community organizations, and institutions. We believe durable progress begins when communities help define the problem, shape the response, and assess the results.

Our mission

To strengthen African immigrant youth, elders, families, and communities in Minnesota through culturally grounded programs, storytelling, research, advocacy, and institutional education.

Our Vision

Thriving African immigrant communities where youth and families are safe, seen, heard, valued, connected, and culturally prepared to lead change.

Our core values

Cultural Integrity

Community Leadership

We honor the diverse histories, languages, traditions, and identities of African immigrant communities. We treat culture as a source of knowledge, belonging, resilience, and responsibility.

People closest to a challenge should help define the response. We build programs with community members and respect knowledge gained through lived experience.

  • Design culturally grounded programs in response to identified needs.
  • Document community experiences through research and storytelling.
  • Support individuals and families as they navigate institutions.
  • Work with institutions to improve policies, communication, and services.
  • Review community feedback and program results to improve our work.

Founder’s Message

AFRISOTA was born from research, lived experience, and a responsibility to act.

During my doctoral research on human rights violations against legal immigrants in Minnesota, I listened to people describe cultural alienation, discrimination, institutional barriers, and emotional harm. Their experiences were serious, but they were often poorly understood or left out of public conversations. I also saw the knowledge, courage, cultural strength, and commitment that African immigrants bring to their families and communities.

AFRISOTA is a response to both realities. We address harm, but we do not define African immigrants by hardship. We create opportunities for youth, parents, elders, and families to preserve culture, strengthen relationships, tell their stories, understand public systems, and help shape decisions.

Our work is guided by Ubuntu and by a commitment to dignity. We believe people should receive support without surrendering their identity. We believe institutions serve communities better when they listen carefully and act on what they learn. We believe African immigrant youth and families should have the tools, relationships, and public voice needed to thrive.

I invite you to learn about our programs, attend a gathering, share your knowledge, volunteer, partner with us, or support the work financially.
